WORKSHOP ON INVESTMENT RISK ANALYSIS

SUMMARY
A workshop on Investment risk analysis was conducted By IIM-C and makeintern.com for the
students of Symbiosis Institute of Health Sciences on 8 th & 9th September 2017. The workshop gave insight about various financial topics like how to analyze risk and manage it. Risk analysis
is the basic requirement for any organization and thus is essential for students and budding
Managers.
The sessions were conducted by Dr. C A Srikanth Parthasarathy. He is a visiting faculty of
finance at IIM-B, NMIMS, and SIBM- Bangalore and chief financing officer at Chakra Venture
Partners.

SESSION DETAILS – Day 1
Session 1 - The session started at 9 am with the inspiring shloka and self-introduction of Dr.CA


Srikanth Parthasarthy.As we were all new to the topic, sir started with what is Risk? Types of
Risk, Portfolio, concepts of alpha, beta and derivative, different economic crisis which took
place in past, their effects and how they were mitigated.
Session 2- This session included concept of volatility which is deviation from the average,
various graphs were shown explaining the change required with increase or decrease in it. Later
on sir talked about Bid-Ask- Spread that is the buy and sell rate, it indicates higher risk if spread
increases over the year. We were also introduced to the concept of efficient market hypothesis,
Junk bond, Masala bond and Co-variance which is important component of Risk Estimation. The
session ended with summarization of topics covered followed by lunch break.
Session 3- The session included explanation of important risk estimation techniques like VAR
(value at risk) and stress testing adopted by organizations.
The session ended with the statement “Risk is observable but often not observed”

SESSION DETAILS – Day 2
The first half of the day started with Dr. C A Srikanth Parthasarathy chanting a short prayer “to
let the light remove the darkness and to let the light of wisdom shine upon us”. Sir gave a brief
recap of the topic covered on the previous day of the workshop and then went on to give a gist of
the day’s upcoming schedule.
The first topic of the day was Leverage, where he talked about what is leverage, equity and
debts. This was followed by a tea break. Later in the day, he talked about risk parameters which
included market risk, credit risk, liquidity risk and operational risk. Sir finished the talk after
briefly explaining about assets and liabilities.
In the second half of the day, twenty-two students of symbiosis institute of health sciences gave a
two- minute summary each about their understanding and learnings from the two day workshop.
Out of these twenty two students the five best performers (Dr. Mariya Khan, Ms.Vanshika
Sengar Dr. Supriya Sharma, Dr. Priyanka Shetye, and Ms. Anshi John) were selected for the
final CARPE- DIEM event to be held at IIM-C in January 2018.The day ended after Dr
Srikanth’s note of appreciation and a photograph with the participants to commemorate the
event.

CONCLUSION
The students actively participated in the workshop as investment risk management is a tool that
is required in every organization. The Workshop was an educational one leaving an impact on
students .It stressed upon how important it is to observe and estimate risk so that the planning to
mitigate the same can be done. The workshop threw light upon a topic that was new to the
students. The students were thrilled and actively participated .They appreciated efforts made by
Dr Srikanth to make them understand the tough concepts with simple relatable examples.

RECOMMENDATIONS
1) This type of workshop should be conducted frequently as it helps to update our knowledge of
other fields like finance.
2) The duration of the workshops could be longer for better insight of the topics.
