GENDER SENSITIZATION LECTURE by Ms. Renuka Mukadam

Ms Renuka Mukadam, an avid speaker on Gender  related issues began with sharing the importance of the session on Gender Sensitization. The Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act passed in December, 2013 includes conduction of such sensitization and awareness sessions.

The UGC decided to look at how the colleges were dealing with various struggles related to gender such as gender bias, etc. The report ‘Saksham’ was developed and it depicted that approximately 42% of students were females in every college and that is why such sessions are important. These are for both females and males, hence, are not gender restricted.
Next we discussed the difference between equality and equity. Equality pertains to equal rights in equal circumstances whereas, equity is equal rights posing special conditions.

This followed by an interesting film about standard stereotypes in our day to day lives like boys should not cry or girls should dress in feminine ways only, etc.

Then she explained the difference between sex and gender. Sex is biological identity of a person while Gender is socio-cultural identity. Gender is constructed by a process called ‘socialisation’. It is the conditioning of a person defined as a process of different upbringing of boys and girls. Efforts are being put to change these stereotypes. One such example is - women cab drivers, although it does not ensure safety of female passengers, it is bringing changes and is a step towards discrimination against women with regards to profession.
She then emphasized on the wrong notions portrayed by the media such as when a girl says ‘no’ to romance it means ‘yes’. This is one of the reasons for bad acceptance of rejection by boys, leading to stalking, acid attacks, etc.
Another video was shown enacting what girls and boys are made to realise since the day they are born such as the colours they should dress in, responsibilities, attitude, etc.
This was followed by a discussion on patriarchal and matriarchal society. India is predominantly a patriarchal society implying that power and its dynamics are given to men. She talked about sexuality which is not just sexual behaviour but also includes thoughts and attitude.
She explained the meaning of sexual harassment. An overview of Sexual Harassment Act, 2013 was explained and the case of Bhavri Devi was discussed which lead to the ‘Vishakha Guidelines’. It applies to harassment of women at workplaces, it also includes educational institutes.
It involves ‘quid pro quo’ which means demanding favours in return of something else, physical contact, showing pornography, making sexually coloured remarks. It is different from flirting in many aspects like touch, stare, etc. This followed by another video regarding sexual harassment and the varying opinions of boys and girls about eve teasing. It was an informative video urging females to take stand and complain. The helpline no. 103 was shown as well.
She further explained as to what should be done to lodge a case to the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC). A written complaint is lodged within 3 months. During the period of enquiry, certain reliefs are given to the victim such as leave during the period. She stressed that ICC information should be displayed in the campus.

The session was followed by a question-answer session. Ms. Renuka finished with a beautiful quote
“Men of Quality respect Women’s Equality

“Leadership Development Series” 2015 - GUEST LECTURE BY MR ASEEM GARG

The much awaited and inspiring “Leadership Development Series 2015 ” had begun in Symbiosis Institute of Health Sciences. Our    esteemed   guest of the day , Mr Aseem  Garg ,marked the beginning of this series. Mr Aseem Garg, CEO and founder of DCDC is an alumni of IIM , Bangalore. He is a successful entrepreneur   , a visionary and a dynamic leader.

The venue of the lecture was at Vishwabhawan   Auditoruim.  A hall was filled with enthusiastic, ambitious students   waiting   for the inspiring sessions. The programme   began with our HOD , Col Dr Vijay Deshpande giving his thoughts on vision driven leadership. He defined vision in as simple words as “the answer   to  where  do you see yourself in future”. He emphasized on the fact that it is very important to know where   we want to reach. His short talk was very powerful and gave us an insight on what the further session would be on.

Next we had our placement head Ms    Devika   Shetty   introducing our esteemed guest and inviting him to the Dias. The much humble and smiling   , Mr   Aseem   Garg  addressed us on entrepreneurship. In simple words it refers to taking up an idea, developing a concept around it and starting a business. It is the journey to unknown. Inspite of belonging to a business background, Mr Aseem resisted all the pressure to join the family business. His zeal to do something different landed him in engineering and then an MBA in IIM  , Bangalore. The passion in him prevented him from taking up a high paying bank job which most of his peers would have preferred. He had already developed a business plan. Though he was not very sure of the journey, his destination was decided. He wanted to start a chain of dialysis centers   which was by then a very new concept   in India. In spite of all the discouragement he received from his peers, he still believed in his idea. As   rightly said   “where    there is a will, there is a way”. He managed to get a job at National Kidney Foundation, which was by then nurturing a chain of dialysis centers. After that there was no looking back for him. Hard work, determination and the zeal to achieve has made him reach the position he rightly and proudly holds now. His brainchild DCDC , now successful 68 centers and is venturing with pace to its 100th one.

The lesson of life that Mr   Aseem   Garg   shared had so much to learn from. He made us realize that   not everything in the universe can be controlled by us. Life is not only to those who are gifted.  He explained it beautifully by giving example of Karana and Arjun from Mahabharata. As rightly explained by him “life is a race, some ahead of us and some behind us .All we need to do is catching up with the guy ahead of us and making sure that we are ahead of the people behind us. He made us realize how important it is to have a vision .If we have a vision and the passion to fulfill it, no one can stop us from achieving it. The session ended with Ms Devika Shetty’s   quote “Be the change you wish to see in the world”.

On the whole it was a very enriching and inspiring session. At the end of the session we were all motivated to realize our passion in life . We never know what we are capable of as long as we try. Success only comes to those who dared   to dream. The future is uncertain, but it is full of hopes and opportunities. As Paulo Coelho rightly said “When you really want something in life  , the entire universe will help you in conspiring it”

And this indeed was true for Mr Aseem Garg

TRAINING SESSION ON PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT

The three day training session was held i.e13th,15th and 17th July 2015 for MBA-HHM batch 2015-17.
The sessions were taken by Miss Christine D.Patham who has a vast experience in marketing with many reputed companies, after which she moved  to work as an HRD trainer, which was a paradigm shift in her career. Here she realised that she wanted to do something more than just being in a desk job decided  to take her passion as a trainer . The sessions were based on various topics involving the overall personality development.

July-13th : PERSONALITY DEVELOPMENT AND BRAND YOU!
This was first session , emphasis was on
Ø  Realisation and increased potential
Ø  Credibility,
Ø  Enhancing leadership role
Ø  Strengthening morality
Ø  Ethics for future.
The elevator pitch concept was the new idea of introduction we learnt, which helped us define ourselves in 60seconds in a short and crisp way, which can be used on meeting someone for the first time and also introduction.
This tool is well used in interviews where most of the time interview panel start with OK -
“ So please tell us some thing about you”
Second emphasis was on basic etiquettes of greeting
Ø  Firm hand shake,
Ø  conversing in a polite yet confident tone
Ø  Pitch of communication
Ø  Warm smile on our face
Ø  All this can make a lot of difference when we interact with someone.
In the second half she gave us the activity on imagination –
“Keeping our eyes closed and imagining the sky.”
After the beautiful imagination came the surprising meanings behind the visions which gave an insight to what our basic nature is.
The second activity was on the type of personality, various questions were put forward and the results stood for the different types of personalities according to the human psychology.
July 15th: COMMUNICATION SKILLS,DRESS SENSE,DINING ETIQUETTES AND STRESS MANAGEMENT.
The second session was held on 15h July, where we were told the importance of being a good listener and how we tend to misinterpret things by not paying attention or not being able to understand what a person says.
The emphasis of a word and how it changes the interpretation of an entire statement was something to wonder about!
The next topic she spoke of was the importance of having a good dressing sense.
Smart managers should not only talk smart but also look smart. The first impression which is created is always by what we wear and how we carry ourselves, examples of how appropriate clothing plays a major role in judging people and it should be according to the occasion.
Dining etiquettes was something which was one of the most interesting topics of the day, where she helped us know the American and British styles of dining using various cutlery and glasses too.
The second Half was about stress management where we were introduced to the terms “eustress” (positive stress”) and “distress” (negative stress). She explained how worrying about future and fear of repeating mistakes of the past can result in stress. We got encouraged for not regretting over the past and learning from mistakes by getting rid of our weakness.
This was followed by a series of stress awareness tests which helped us understand the reactions we give on certain situations and how satisfied we are from our profession and work.

The day ended with a very inspiring and indeed heart touching video of Nick Vujicic, who taught us the importance of life and that we should seize the day with beautiful memories and live each day with high spirits and joy.
July 17thTIME MANAGEMENT AND TEAM BUILDING.
The third and last day was on time management when we had been asked to imagine what we would do if we had Rs.86,400 with us.The class spent the next 5 minutes fantasizing about the huge amount of money,at the end of which we got to know that those were the number of seconds we had in a day and the things we chose to do with the money were the ways we chose to spend our entire day.A quick realisation of this fact followed a set of tests which gave us an insight of how much we value time and how we can manage our day better by changing a few things.
In the second half we were given the example of Steven Covey’s “90/10 Principle” which talks about how we can simplify our life by only changing our reactions to the situations, if not being able to stop them from happening.
This was followed by “Steven Covey’s Urgency Index” test which stood by the principle of “First Things First”.
After this she spoke of the Biorhythm or Biological Clock and said that everyone has their “peaks” and “troughs” of energy throughout the day. This was followed by a talk on-
Ø  Team building& team work help us understand the importance of team work
Ø  One leader in a team and team member are equally important
Ø  Role of co-ordination- important role in teamwork
Ø  Case study which ended the session.
Sessions like these are not only been informative, but also interactive where we learnt a lot of things which may not be a part of our academics, but are essential qualities which will help us transform fromMBA graduates into  “SMART MANAGERS”.
These are the values which we need to inculcate in ourselves that will make us responsible and reliable and through which we will understand how to prioritize things and deal with situations which will make us stronger and successful in every walk of life
“Through practicing and adopting them as a way of life.”
We, batch of MBA-HHM 2015-17 look forward to have more of such sessions which will help us grow beyond the bounds of our limitations and build our confidence.

Blood Donation Campaign Report - Campaigning Team

The aim of blood donation campaign was to generate awareness on Blood Donation and highlight its significance in saving lives during emergencies. Symbiosis center for healthcare organizes a Blood Donation Camp every year in collaboration with many Blood Banks. The campaign organised by Symbiosis center for Healthcare, in co-operation with various Blood Banks gathered a large number of Staff and students who voluntarily donated their blood for the Symbiosis Blood Donation Camp 2015.
Ever since the date for the blood drive was announced, along with SCHC doctors, students worked very hard to promote this blood drive amongst the students  of symbiosis college to participate and donate blood.  We the students of MBA HHM 2015-17 were involved in a campaign committee where we had to perform a skit at different campuses of symbiosis. Some of our batchmates were selected for voice modulation for the skit and had the opportunity to record at symbiosis studios Lavale. The campaigning team Group 2 were assigned Lavale, Vimannagar and Hinjewadi Campus for performing the skit.

It was a wonderful experience spreading awareness and motivating the students.  Besides performing skit, we also promoted the drive by holding the posters with different slogans like DONATE BLOOD SAVE LIFE and encouraged as many students as possible in campus, canteen and mess.  As a result, there was an overwhelming response from the donors with their participation in this noble cause. The teaching and non teaching staff donated their blood along with the students after undergoing pre-screening medical tests that cleared them for donation.
In order to acknowledge each donor for their contribution, donors were distributed certificates provided by the respective blood banks.  They were also provided with complimentary gifts. A total of 1898 Blood Bags were collected from all the campuses of Symbiosis University. Many of our members also donated blood, and became part of the Elite Donor Club.
