Leadership Development Series : Session 8

Leaders are the ones who inspire with their thought and vision.

This was exemplified by Dr. Rajeev Dhere, Executive Director, Serum Institute of India Ltd. We were privileged to have Dr. Rajeev as our thought leader from the Pharma vertical to guide and mentor us on our 8th session of the Leadership Development Series.

Dr. Rajeev works in the R&D portfolio with Serum Institute of India Ltd., one of the biggest suppliers of vaccines such as the measles vaccine and has a body of work constituting over 30 years in this industry. He has traversed the journey from a microbiologist to an Executive Director of Serum Institute and truly embodies the spirit of leadership.

During the course of the lecture Mr. Dhere outlined several relevant and defining points about the growth of the pharma industry and specifically the growth of the vaccine industry within it. Dr. Rajeev also gave several insights on the eras of the Pharma industry and the transition between them over the years. He also increased our depth of knowledge about the organization and working of the Pharma industry. He touched upon relevant aspects such as stages in product development, resource optimization and laying down of systems. He also highlighted the need for gap analysis of the present systems and the necessity to fill those gaps.

But most of all Dr. Rajeev inspired us with his vision of a leader and the thought that in every person burns the fire of leadership. He narrated several instances where seemingly ordinary people display great courage and leadership potential and rise to the occasion in times of need. His definition of a leader as a human being who is not only brave but sensitive and considerate to men, machine and surroundings as well was truly motivating. He also shared an interesting video clip which urged us to challenge several pre-conceived notions.

All in all this was a most befitting end to our Leadership Development Series initiated on 16th August 2014. This Series, an initiative of the placement team of MBA-HHM2013-15 batch of Symbiosis Institute of Health Sciences not only gave the students an opportunity to interact with several leaders from various healthcare verticals but also enabled the students to broaden their horizons and develop a better understanding of the functioning of the healthcare industry.

The series was a resounding success due to the participation of our thought leaders from various verticals and the dedicated hard-work of the student body and the initiative is truly worthy of applause.

Session 7 of Leadership Development Series

The seventh session of the ‘Leadership development series’ was presided over by Mr. Ajay Pitre from Pitre Ventures, who enlightened the students on ‘Health care challenges in India and abroad and our way forward to conquer those.
The guest speaker appreciated the efforts put in by the students to make posters on different healthcare verticals, exhibiting their creativity and enthusiasm. He was then felicitated by Brig. Dr. Anil Pandit, Professor, SIHS.
Mr. Ajay Pitre explained about the practical issues that the Indian Healthcare industry is facing and what are the different ways to counter those challenges. He explained why it is not fair for India to be compared with countries like the United States considering the fact that the US spends at least 30 to 40 times more money on their healthcare system. He widened the views of the students on how our country has achieved so much more with so little resources.

The political factors which play a major role in the execution of the plans have not been very favorable in India. But the situation is changing and the forces are much more favorable today. Further sir added that we are in the best of positions as a country specially if we talk about change of mindset. Today the Indians are more aware and open minded.
Talking about politics and healthcare he also added that time is not far when Health will be an agenda for elections and that will help in penetration and funding of healthcare. The most important point highlighted by him was the population which cannot afford expensive healthcare and they end up visiting the small nursing homes where there is no sign of quality or hygiene. And that should be the area of target for change because most of the country’s population ends up receiving healthcare services from these nursing homes.

After listening to his talk students were very clear about what needs to be done in terms of making healthcare better and affordable to all. And like he said “Change will come very soon” we should not expect change unless we become a part of it.

Leadership Development Series 2014

“Leaders aren’t born, they are made.”
This statement is being upheld in its truest sense, for the first time in the SIHS campus, in the form of ‘Leadership Development Series 2014’, an initiative by the placement team 2014.

The series brings together different stalwarts of the healthcare industry, who have achieved immensely in their field of expertise, to come and share their valuable insights into the reality of the industry with the students. The sixth session of the ‘Leadership development series’ was presided over by Dr. Ravindra Banpel, Regional team leader – west, National Polio Surveillance project –WHO, who enlightened the students on ‘Global Health: Present – Future and Challenges’.

The guest speaker appreciated the efforts put in by the students to make posters on different healthcare verticals, exhibiting their creativity and enthusiasm. He was then felicitated by Brig. Dr. Anil Pandit, Professor, SIHS. Dr. Shuchita Agarwal, student, MBA – HHM (2013 -15) received applaud and felicitation from Dr. Ravindra Banpel for having won the first place in paper presentation at healthcare conference held at ASCI, Hyderabad.

Dr. Ravindra Banpel educated the students to widen their views on healthcare as a whole and especially public health. He advocated that health is not to be looked in isolation but as a field with complex interactions with other domains. He further discussed the current global health scenario highlighting that the major achievement in global health was increase in life expectancy at birth by 6 years since 1990. The discussion revealed that public health challenges outnumbered the achievements so far.
The countries of the world are faced by two major problem statements; Unfinished agenda and additive burden. While most underdeveloped countries are in the domain of unfinished agenda, the middle income countries are fronting the additive burden. Optimal utilization of available domestic and International resources is a key solution to the problems. Most importantly, political will plays a significant role in shaping the country’s healthcare progress.
The students were keen to understand progress of Indian healthcare in spite of the numerous public health challenges, which was addressed by the speaker during the question and answer session. The students were also curious to know how they could contribute to the future of public health.
Dr. Ravindra Banpel concluded his motivating session with a note of praise for the Father of epidemiology and enthused the students to innovate and be drivers of change in the sphere of public health.
The session ended with the address by Ms. Devika Shetty, Head Training and Placement, SIHS who quoted Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam’s words on the importance of character in attaining Knowledge.

Where there is righteousness, there Is beauty of character;
Where there is character, there is harmony;
Where there is harmony, there is order;

Where there is order, there is peace
